Vocational Education and Trning VET is essential in preparing individuals for work, fostering skills that enhance employability, promoting personal development, encouraging active citizenship, boosting enterprise performance, competitiveness, research and innovation. VET systems are bolstered by strong stakeholder networks that involve social partners like employers and trade unions, and are governed through bodies such as chambers, committees, and councils.
Initial Vocational Education and Trning I-VET is typically conducted at the upper secondary level or post-secondary levels before entering professional life. This education can be delivered in classroom environments within schools or practical settings like trning centers and companies. On average, approximately 50 of young Europeans aged between 15-19 are enrolled in I-VET at upper secondary level. However, this EU average masks significant geographical disparities that range from as low as 15 to over 70.
Continuing Vocational Education and Trning C-VET is med at upgrading skills or acquiring new ones post-initial education and trning or even after starting professional life. It's largely a work-based program.
The primary goal set by the Council of the EU is that by 2025, all vocational education learners should benefit from mobility abroad as part of their studies or trning period through Erasmus+, ming for an 8 target.
The European Commission funds initiatives like Erasmus+ to promote VET opportunities. Under this program, over 130,000 vocational students and apprentices along with around 20,000 VET staff have been able to benefit from mobility experiences annually as of their last iteration in the period between 2014-2020.
The European Social Fund Plus ESF+ allocates significant resources towards improving access to quality education, trning and skills development for all. The fund will support measures that m to anticipate, develop and recognize skills, tackle mismatches between skills and job needs, especially in response to environmental sustnability challenges and shortages of skilled workers.
As part of the European Education Area strategic framework set for 2021-2030, working groups on vocational education and trning VET along with a sub-group focused on environmental education have been established. These groups facilitate information exchange and best practice sharing among member states.
