Empowering Women and Improving Livelihoods Through Skills Development in Lebanon

The International Labour Organization ILO is working towards enhancing social justice and promoting decent work by equipping Syrian and Lebanese youth with skills that align closely with the current labor market needs. This initiative simultaneously empowers women, fostering their participation in technical and vocational trning programs.

A significant milestone was reached recently when Racha Abdul Karim, a 36-year-old Syrian resident in Lebanon, successfully completed her trning under the ILO's post-Covid-19 healthcare services for elderly care program implemented in collaboration with the Safadi Foundation. The Lebanese NGO specializes in providing skills trning to individuals.

Reflecting on her experience during the trning, Abdul Karim expressed great satisfaction: I have always harbored a deep passion for nursing; however, my parents discouraged me from pursuing this career due to its demanding nature and overnight shifts which were perceived as unsuitable for women in society. Yet, with newfound confidence following her successful completion of the program, she shared that she learned essential skills that would prove invaluable not only when caring for elderly people but also for any patients.

Upon finishing her trning at Safadi Accelerated Vocational Trning Center and receiving her certification, Abdul Karim was hired as a caregiver for an elderly woman residing in a private home. Initially apprehensive about this responsibility, she relied on the skills she had acquired during the trning, including on-the-job-trning, which proved to be incredibly beneficial.

I am immensely happy that I can now practice and utilize these new abilities, sd Abdul Karim with joy. I look forward to expanding my experience in this field and improving my livelihood.

Racha Abdul Karim exemplifies one of the 100 Syrian and Lebanese individuals who have benefited from skills trning and subsequent support services under the Skill-Up Lebanon Phase II project, a joint initiative by the ILO and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation. This project is med at enhancing skill acquisition with market relevance and increasing employability through competency-based skills trning coupled with pre-enrollment career guidance and post-trning assistance.

Confidence in oneself and one's capabilities can lead to success, Abdul Karim encourages others, highlighting her journey as a testament of this belief.
