Revamping Future Leadership with : SMU's 9th Global Summer Program

Singapore Management University SMU inaugurated its ninth Global Summer Program GSP on June 24, 2023, by introducing a pioneering Digital Intelligence track. This innovative addition prepare students for an evolving world transformed by and digital change. Over 250 participants from 35 countries converged at the Mochtar Riady Auditorium with enthusiasm, and among them were 125 students who opted for this forward-thinking path focusing on business-data management, and more.

The Digital Intelligence track aligns seamlessly with SMU's strategic pillar of Digital Transformation, contributing significantly to achieving its Vision 2025. It complements the program’s existing tracksAsian Insights and Sustnable Futuresoffering participants a comprehensive outlook on digital innovation.

At the launch ceremony, Ms Feon Ang, Managing Director for Asia Pacific at LinkedIn, emphasized the rapid shift in skill requirements across industries worldwide. Ms Ang highlighted that job roles are evolving with 72 of jobs requiring different skills in Singapore alone and discussed the confluence between technological advancements and their impact on both employers and employees.

Ms Ang encouraged fresh graduates to adopt a growth mindset, embracing both hard skills and adaptability for success in the era defined.

The launch event was graced by Ms. Feon Ang along with dan Wong, Assistant Professor of Urban Studies Education, College of Integrative Studies who moderated proceedings, Yuanto Kusnadi, Associate Professor of Accounting Education and Academic Director SMU-X, as well as Rick Tay, Head of the Centre for Global Education and Opportunities GEO. Representatives from SMU Office of Industry Engagement OIE such as Jenn Goh, Assistant Manager, Nelson Ng, Associate Director, and Catherine Chong, Director were also in attance.

A Holistic Perspective on Digital Evolution

The GSP’s Digital Intelligence track leveraged SMU's strengths in digital transformation along with its extensive industry connections. Over four weeks, students gned invaluable insights through corporate visits at tech giants like Huawei, Salesforce, and OCBC Banka local blue-chip firm that has successfully integrated technology into operations.

Guest lectures by experts from Capital A rAsia Group provided a glimpse into leveraging technology to address business challenges with innovative database management techniques. Corporate tours offered participants an understanding of the socioeconomic dimensions in Singapore and Asia through visits to JTC Corporation, Monetary Authority of Singapore, and other establishments.

The program also facilitated workshops on Drone Flying, Archery 101, and 3D Printing, allowing students to explore new interests while forging connections with peers from around the globe. Notably, a Tchoukball session was lauded for fostering team spirit among participants.

Rick Tay, Head of SMU Centre for Global Education and Opportunities GEO, expressed satisfaction at witnessing participants' engagement with emerging trs and innovations, empowering them to make positive contributions to their communities worldwide.

He added that these students are now part of a global network of change-makers who will continue to achieve great things together. This year's program successfully combined academic learning with opportunities for personal growth and cultural exchange.
