Empowering Nations through Education: The OECD's Role in Skills Development and Global Policy Leadership

The OECD Directorate for Education and Skills, one of twelve substantive departments within the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development OECD, is dedicated to enhancing individuals' capability and empowering nations by facilitating the identification and development of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values that drive better job opportunities, quality lifestyles, economic prosperity, and social integration.

The leadership of this dynamic organization falls under the Directorship of Andreas Schleicher. The work conducted within this directorate is governed through four specialized committees that oversee strategic decision-making, set research agas, manage budgets, facilitate collaborations with partners and stakeholders, ensuring coherent direction across various education domns:

  1. Education Policy Committee: This committee provides strategic oversight on the core activities being undertaken by the Directorate.

  2. Centre for Educational Research and Innovation Governing Board CERI: CERI not only conducts pioneering research but also promotes innovative strategies in education and learning, fostering bridges between research outcomes and practical policy implementation.

  3. Programme for International Student Assessment Governing Board PISA: PISA is responsible for assessing the academic performance of fifteen-year-olds across participating countries in mathematics, science, and reading literacy, offering critical insights into educational effectiveness worldwide.

  4. Survey of Adult Skills Governing Board: This board oversees the Survey of Adult Skills, which measures proficiency levels in literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving abilities in digital contexts for adults aged 16-65 across multiple countries.
