In the realm of research in China, women scientists are facing unique challenges and barriers that hinder their progression towards senior positions and access to funding Ger in Chinese Research Areas published by Elsevier and National Science Library of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Despite narrowing gaps in professional promotion among researchers, women often encounter an unseen glass ceiling in academia, making up only 10 of funding recipients and accounting for just 5 of academic staff at the Chinese Academy of Sciences South China Morning Post, July 2021.
Empowered by this understanding, Elsevier Foundation took a decisive step towards addressing these challenges through its collaboration with China Women's Association for Science and Technology CWAST. This strategic partnership create more inclusive platforms and specialized networks to support female researchers in China. By providing targeted trning, role modeling, and networking opportunities, the alliance seeks to mitigate ger disparities within science by equipping women scientists with essential tools for career advancement.
Established in 1993, CWAST is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering Chinese female scientists through professional growth, education, trning programs, scientific forums, and domestic-international collaboration. Guided by its current President, Professor Hongyang Wang, the association serves as a beacon of support for women seeking to make an impact in science.
I believe that science offers immense opportunities for women. In today's knowledge-driven society, intuition and resilience are key qualities rather than physical strength, areas where women excel.
Professor Wei Yu, Honorary President, Third Session of CWAST Council
As part of our commitment towards ger equality, the Elsevier Foundation partnered with CWAST to organize a Women in Science workshop coinciding with Elsevier's ISPT conference in Zhengzhou. This gathering provided an inspiring environment for scientists and engineers focusing on chemical and biological separation techniques to connect, exchange ideas, and receive valuable insights from experienced role.
The opportunity to interact with a group of talented women scientists working on cutting-edge research is truly rewarding. I hope these workshops will foster more female participation in science careers and empower them to overcome common challenges faced by female researchers.
Professor Qilin Li, Rice University
Building upon the success of this first event, we are expanding our collaboration between Elsevier Foundation and CWAST with two additional Women in Science workshops scheduled at upcoming conferences:
